Urban Homesteading

What is the most radical thing you can think of that you can do with your life?  For the Dervaes family, it is having a little homestead right in the middle of urban Pasadena, California.  Why?  Well, have you seen the price of land lately?  For people who want to grow their own food and live simply, it is not as easy as just running out and moving to the country.  Those days are long gone thanks to people like my grandparents who ran from country life, sold their land and broke all ties to the country for future generations.   There are many, many legalities tied up with moving to the country these days and for those able to afford it, go for it!  I wish I could say, "take me with you," but that might be awkward.

I happen to agree with the Dervaes in getting back to our roots and falling in love with simplicity.  Asking the hard questions on why we do what we do and when the answers don't line up with responsibility, having the strength to make sometimes, tough changes.  And changing ourselves can be the toughest change of all.

If you have fifteen minutes, I hope you will take the time to watch this little film with your family and if you love it like I do, please pass it on!  This is a life we aspire to whether or not we move to the country.  A life of simple pleasures, being surrounded by loving family and friends, and working with God to grow a little pocket of paradise.
